The League: Prized Possessions

by Fong Sam

Brian Adams at runs a weekly blog project called The League of Extraordinary Bloggers. To learn more about the League, click here–it’s highly recommended. I’ve vowed to submit an entry for a couple of weeks now, but have so far been caught up with work. I’m glad to finally be able to submit a post for the League.

This week’s assignment is:

What is the one item in your collection you would save if your house was being swallowed by a sink hole, carried off in a tornado, and then swept away in a flood.

I work at a memorabilia auction house, so I am lucky enough to come into contact with some of the greatest film props and costumes ever made: The Ruby Slippers from The Wizard of Oz, Bela Lugosi’s cape from Dracula, the Everlasting Gobstopper from Willy Wonka, the Maltese Falcon, original King Kong armature, phasers & tricorders from Star Trek, Marilyn Monroe’s subway dress from The Seven Year Itch, and most recently the Captain America shield. The list goes on.

However, the irony is that I’m not a collector myself. I certainly appreciate and enjoy all these priceless collectibles. So as far as running into a burning building to save a sentimental toy, I don’t think it would happen. Yet.

While there is nothing really compelling at my house, there are some things at my office for which I would feel horrible if tragedy befell them. Most endearing to me is probably the Small Soldiers diorama that currently sits in front of my office. This magnificent display sat for many years in the office of legendary special effects makeup artist and props maker, Stan Winston.

Each object on the table is meticulously positioned and glued down. The original electronics on the Small Soldiers are still in working condition. The entire display measures 80″ L x 34″ W x 60″ (at the highest point) and is extremely heavy. Chances are I would be helpless to save it from a fire, sinkhole, tornado or any other natural disasters. Stan Winston was clearly proud of his creation to have this in his office and rightfully so. It is a masterful piece of art. If there is a collectible that if destroyed would make me shed a tear, this would be it.

Head over to this week’s assignment page on to read about the things that would make other members of the League run back into a burning building to save.
